Welcome

I encourage you to use this blog with your child. Have them explain to you what they were doing, learning, exploring, creating etc. Use this as an opportunity to talk about school and to allow your child to reflect on their day.

Writing Throughout the Day

Do children write in Kindergarten? Absolutely they write in Kindergarten. Writing happens all day long in all different areas in the classroom. The children may not be sitting in a desk and doing a group lesson where everyone's writing looks the same however, the children write all the time. I have been encouraging my students to write each day.  Most of the children are ready to start putting their writing in action. The foundation has been established through word play, alphabet play, sight word recognition and fun activities we do all day long to strengthen language skills. The following pictures demonstrate the different types of writing that are happening in our classroom.

The first thing I do as the teacher is set up the writing environment for my students. Every area in the room has writing material available for the children to use at any given time.

At circle time I often model a form of writing and hope that it inspires children to create different forms of writing. We have a writing board that is really popular right now. At the end of the day we as a group look at different ways we were writing. I often show the children that writing takes all different forms. A letter to a friend is writing, making a list, creating a plan, labelling a picture, creating a book etc. I ask the children if they would be willing to display some of their work they have done during the day on the writing wall. Most love to hang their work and at the end of the week we have a fantastic collection of writing. The writing samples are then removed and placed in their personal portfolios. The next week the wall seems to fill again! Take a look at all our fantastic writing.

This is our beautiful word and writing wall!
Signing in is a form of writing.

Writing at the dramatic play centre.
 We have amazing authors

These boys like to make maps when they are at the block centre. They are always planning!
There is a high interest in learning how to draw certain animals. This student wanted to get instructions off the internet to help create specific pictures. Then she added words! This took off and we now have many drawing sheets that give us steps on how to draw specific items.
Sharing time one of the most important times of our day. What a great way to write and celebrate the learning from our day together.

 Another map.
What a beautiful painting. He asked if he could get help making his sentence. If a child shows interest but, may not be ready to complete an entire sentence I write if for them. No matter what writing is always encouraged in a positive way.
More drawing interest and book making. I teach the students how to access information they need to complete their inquiry project of the day.

This is a Birthday Party plan and list of things that is need for the party. Writing with a high interest in Birthday Party Time!

 This is Superman!
Co created with students and teacher we made a list of characteristics that describe Superman.
A zoo was created and writing incorporated the project.
During our sharing time a question that is often asked is "How did you make it?" The children were spending a lot of time talking about the steps involved in their projects. We had a discussion at circle time and together we decided to create an instruction sheet that could be used if needed. This encouraged the children to write even more. This was a great tool to use for a group of boys that always build amazing things with the small building material.

At the end of our busy day we always celebrate our learning during Sharing Time.
